Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is bakery by-product?
Bakery by-product is any ingredient used in the bakery world, raw or cooked, which is discarded, or intended or required to be discarded.   Bakery by-product generally consists of dough, flour, sugar and other edible ingredients, icing, burnt or broken product.  In the baking business, product that does not meet specifications or is out of date is also considered a by product.

2) What types of inedible bakery by product can be recycled into feed?
Wilenta recycles any of the bakery by-product described above, including product in retail packaging.  We work with our customers to find ways to reuse or recycle all of their by-products. Even if a product is unsuitable for feed purposes we often can find another application. We encourage you to contact us with any questions or request a free, no-obligation consultation for your bakery business.

3) Does Wilenta serve my area?
Wilenta provides recycling services to New Jersey, New York City boroughs: Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Long Island, Connecticut, and Eastern Pennsylvania. See our service area map

4) How is Wilenta Feed bakery by-product recycling different?
Wilenta employs collection service standards to ensure consistency. For example, Wilenta Feed uses specialized containers that seal with a rubber gasket to reduce odor and leakage. In addition, Wilenta can provide material handling equipment tailored to your needs and help prevent workplace injuries while increasing efficiency.  Most importantly we provide customers with education and training. Our employees work directly with your staff to show them how to properly sort the bakery by-product so that contamination is minimal.  More about Wilenta Feed

5) What is the schedule of collections for bakery by-product?
Wilenta provides on-call and scheduled collections. Our on-call customers contact us when a certain weight or volume has been reached. Larger companies generate enough recyclable material to warrant a set schedule of collections. Smaller customers who generate a consistent quantity may benefit from scheduled Packer truck service. Contact us for a free, no-obligation consultation for your bakery business

6) Is there a minimum quantity required for recycling bakery by-product?
Typically, if your bakery factory fills at least a 2 yard container every week, you can cut disposal costs at least 30% with Wilenta Feed recycling services vs. paying for regular trash disposal.  Contact us for a no-obligation, free waste audit

8) How are animal feeds regulated?
Animal feed is regulated at both the federal and the state level. Monitoring and enforcement responsibilities are fragmented over a number of different agencies.  These include the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the equivalent state agencies. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is a voluntary membership association of local, state and federal agencies charged by law to regulate the sale and distribution of animal feeds and animal drug remedies.  Visit AAFCO site for latest regulatory news and information

9) What happens to bakery factory food waste after it’s collected by Wilenta?
Bakery by products are picked up and transported to Wilenta’s processing facility in Secaucus, NJ.  Wilenta will process the material into a dryer, more suitable product for cattle farmers, and feed mills.  Once the material is at a feed mill, it is mixed in batches to be heated and ground into a finished product with a granular consistency.   The feedstock is augmented with vitamins and minerals and tested for consistency of the nutritional value.  The feed is shipped all over the tri-state area.  More about Wilenta Feed

We're honored to serve our customers since 1978 and proud that more than 90% are still with us. Here are a few examples of how we deliver on our promise of superior customer service:

    • Snack Producer Saves $65,000+An environmental consultant contacted us on behalf of a major New Jersey snack producer. The company switched from traditional waste management to Wilenta Feed, reduced trash pick-ups to bi-monthly service, and saved more than $65,000 in disposal fees alone in the first year.
    • Blizzard Hits Bakery FactoryWhen the snow storm was over, our client’s bakery plant was covered in glass from windows shattered by gale force winds. The plant manager called Wilenta for a referral for emergency clean up services. Instead we dispatched a crew of Wilenta employees who cleaned up all the debris and worked with staff to get the plant back online within a few hours.
